Fire Hydrant Maintenance

During the week of January 7th Chelan County Fire District One personnel were out in force removing snow from around our fire district hydrants. Chelan County Fire District One has teamed up with Chelan County Public Works, and the Chelan County Public Utility District, to make sure access to your hydrants is maintained. Keeping our hydrants free and clear of built up snow is a critical part of our fire suppresion tactics.

During the winter, plowed, snow-blown, and shoveled snow can quickly accumulate around a fire hydrant, making it difficult to gain access during an emergency situation. We need your help in identifying these inaccessible hydrants, so we are all prepared if an emergency should arise. Here are a few helpful tips on helping your fire department maintain these hydrants during the winter months.

  • If you see a hydrant buried in the snow, you can contact Chelan County Fire District One, and we will contact the appropriate personnel to take care of the problem. (509) 662-4734
  • If you live close to a hydrant and want to remove the snow yourself, clear a 3 foot area around the hydrant, to allow for firefighter access.
  • When removing snow from roads, driveways, and walkways, attempt to keep the snow as far away from the hydrant as possible.
